“Il gesto attraverso”: Albino Pitti at the Royal Castle of Govone

From 3 October to 1 November 2026, the Royal Castle of Govone hosts “Il gesto attraverso”, a solo exhibition by artist Albino Pitti devoted to gestural painting and to the relationship between action, matter and space.

The project brings into the historic rooms of the Savoy residence the work of an artist who, since the 1970s, has made the painterly gesture the core of his practice, gradually pushing its boundaries beyond the traditional surface of the canvas.

The contemporary gesture meets history

In Govone, Albino Pitti’s painting enters into dialogue with an architecture that carries centuries of transformation. The Royal Castle of Govone, part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Residences of the Royal House of Savoy since 1997, preserves on its surfaces the traces of the different eras that shaped its identity: from fortified settlement to aristocratic residence, up to its nineteenth-century transformation into the summer residence of the Savoy family.

It is precisely this encounter between different times and materials that lies at the heart of the exhibition.

Pitti’s gesture is born from physical action: colour, mark, speed and matter become the tools through which the artist builds the work. The surface of the canvas is conceived as a space to be inhabited through gesture, a trace of lived experience and of the moment.

In the Castle, this research engages with surfaces that have themselves been built, decorated, altered and passed through over the centuries. Contemporary painting thus becomes a new layer within a space already deeply marked by human intervention.

“My painterly gesture is a vital action, a charge of pure energy that seeks confrontation with space and matter.”

Albino Pitti: painting, gesture and space

Born in Brescia in 1951, Albino Pitti trained as an artist between Rotterdam and Amsterdam. From the 1970s onwards he developed a body of work rooted in abstraction and gestural painting, progressively freed from representation.

Alongside painting, the central element of his research, he works with sculpture, performance and spatial experimentation. Over the course of his career he has taken part in exhibitions and projects in several European countries and in the United States, including France, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States and Bulgaria.

The Govone exhibition thus brings into a historic residence a contemporary practice closely tied to the physical dimension of the creative act, creating a direct dialogue between gesture, matter, space and memory.

Meet&Greet with the artist

On Saturday 24 October at 3:30 pm visitors will have the chance to meet Albino Pitti in person during a public Meet&Greet.

The event will be an opportunity to explore the relationship between gesture and matter, learn about the artist’s creative process and discuss his vision of painting as a physical and spatial experience.

EXPLORE

DISCOVER THE VISIT ROUTE

Cross through time as you explore the Castle’s rooms.

Initially a noble palace, then a royal residence, and finally a community hub for all the people of Govone, the Castle weaves together centuries of history. Visiting it means retracing the steps that shaped it into the multifaceted—and therefore unique—place it is today.

DISCOVER GOVONE

THE PARK, THE GARDENS, THE VILLAGE, AND THE HIKING PATHS

Govone extends beyond my walls. It is an entire community that takes care of the magnificent places it inhabits. I invite you to explore everything that surrounds me: the park and the gardens, the greenhouse, the intimate rose garden, the village, and the outdoor trails immersed in nature, which you can explore on foot or by bike.

The park, inhabited by squirrels, woodpeckers, jays, embraces the castle all around with its hedges of boxwood, beech trees, elms, and cypresses.

The gardens gather and showcase Maria Cristina's passion for botany, particularly for roses, displaying various splendid antique varieties.

The historic center extends the visit beyond the castle walls, revealing the authenticity of a village that, while continuing to live, preserves its memory.

The trails lead you along the edges of the constellation of which the castle is the protagonist, through fields, vineyards, and hazelnut groves, allowing you to discover the land.
